Tragic update after Australian baby 'violently shaken' to death: Heartbreaking image taken before his death

A 10-month-old baby who died after he was allegedly violently shaken and then dropped into a cot has been pictured for the first time. 

Khaylan Shane Butler was rushed to hospital with serious injuries from a home in Warrane, in Tasmania's south, during the early hours of Friday morning. 

In a new photo of the blue-eyed infant, Khaylan wears a grey jumper and smiles up at the camera while lying on his back on a fluffy rug. 

Tasmania Police on Monday confirmed the little boy had died from his injuries.

'Our condolences are with the family and loved ones of the baby,' a statement said.

'The police investigation is ongoing.' 

Daniel John Ridgers, 25, has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm to the baby by allegedly violently shaking him and dropping him into a cot. 

Ridgers did not enter a plea or apply for bail during an out-of-hours hearing in Hobart's Magistrate Court on Sunday and was remanded in custody. 

He is scheduled to next appear in court on Monday, December 4.

Detectives previously said they believed the baby was injured in a 'serious assault' but warned the investigation is expected to take 'some time'.

'Police were called to the Royal Hobart Hospital around 5:20am ... after a child presented with critical injuries that are believed to be suspicious,' police said in a statement on Saturday. 

The investigation continues.
