Two Georgia football players are arrested for reckless driving in SEPARATE incidents - after a teammate had DUI charges dropped this week

A pair of University of Georgia football players have been arrested for reckless driving in yet another blight on the storied program's reputation.

Thursday morning, it was announced that offensive lineman Bo Hughley was involved in a single-car accident which included failure to maintain lane and reckless driving.

In a separate incident, linebacker Smael Mondon was also charged with reckless driving and racing.

This comes a day after an update came for a DUI case involving running back Trevor Etienne.

Etienne's case involving charges of DUI less safe and DUI under 21 were dismissed - all while the running back pled no contest to a reckless driving charge for an incident which happened in March.

That incident took place shortly after Etienne announced his transfer from Florida to Georgia after two seasons. 

Coach Kirby Smart said at the time, 'I first want to reiterate what I said about the kid last week, he's a great kid from a great family, he's done a tremendous job since he's been here. 

'As we all know young people don't always make great decisions. He's embarrassed, he's upset, it's a teaching moment and I hope he learns from it. He will be under the in-house discipline as well as the university discipline.'

Hughley is a freshman, while Mondon is a junior who managed 42 solo tackles and three sacks last season.

Driving issues have plagued the Bulldogs program since winning a national title in January of 2023.

Most notably, offensive lineman Devin Willock and recruiting staffer Chandler LeCroy were killed in the January 15, 2023 crash in Athens, Georgia after a reckless driving incident that was believed to have been caused by street racing. LeCroy was driving the crashed SUV, while allegedly racing defensive tackle Jalen Carter in his car.

LeCroy was allegedly driving at more than 104.2 mph when the SUV crashed into trees and electrical poles. Her blood-alcohol level was measured at more than two times the legal limit.

Carter, who now plays for the Philadelphia Eagles, was given 12 months' probation and a $1,000 fine after pleading no contest to misdemeanor charges of reckless driving. He was stopped by police and received a warning regarding speeding just months earlier.

In September, former Georgia player-turned-program staffer Jarvis Jones was arrested for speeding and reckless driving. 

In total, no fewer than 15 players have been either arrested or ticketed for speeding and reckless driving since the fatal crash that killed Willock and LeCroy.

A lawsuit stemming from the fatal crash accused program officials in July of 2023 of being negligent as staffers regularly drove department vehicles while under the influence. 

Furthermore, LeCroy had at least four speeding citations in four counties from 2016 to 2022 - at least one of which was reportedly known to program officials. 

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart has maintained that he and his colleagues are working to solve this problem, but last year rejected the idea that different team policies could have prevented the fatalities. 

'No policy or lack thereof policy caused this accident,' Smart told Online Athens in 2023.
