Dustin Poirier has been handed an indefinite medical suspension after being choked unconscious and suffering multiple injuries in his defeat against Islam Makhachev

The 35-year-old fell short in his third attempt to become the new lightweight champion at UFC 302 in New Jersey last weekend.

The five-round battle went back and forth as both men were able to put their strengths on display. Makhachev scored with much control time when he successfully took Poirier down. Meanwhile Poirier managed to do damage when he kept the fight standing.

After getting the fight back on the canvas in the fifth round, Makhachev secured a d'arce choke in the third minute.

It was a bloodbath battle a that saw both lightweight fighters put everything on the line.

And days after the showdown, Poirier took to social media to show the extent of the injuries he suffered.

He wrote on X: 'Nose is broken bad, rib is broken and my ACL is partially torn... FIGHT LIFE'.

Poirier then posted a photo of an x-ray, which showed his nose was shattered in multiple places.

'Knee hit my face. It was the headbutt before. It was accidental, but it hurt,' Poirier explained how he sustained the broken nose in another post.

He has since been given an indefinite medical suspension by the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board.

It is not know if his injuries will require surgery or when he will return to the Octagon.
