US Open organizers worked through the night on Tuesday to check every single seat at Pinehurst following ‘alarming’ fan complaints about collapsing grandstands.

The year’s third major does not kick off until Thursday morning but concerns have already been raised over the safety of the 225,000 fans expected to visit the iconic No 2 course this weekend.

Construction workers were accused of ‘cutting costs’ and using ‘screws that are far too short’, with people claiming to have seen seats collapse and ‘buckle’ in ‘alarming’ scenes. It was even claimed that one grandstand had to be closed.

On Wednesday morning, staff could be seen checking seats behind the opening green. ‘It sucks,’ one worker was overheard telling a colleague. They even took out a screwdriver to illustrate the fragility of the setup.

‘They’re working on it,’ they told DailyMail.com. The issue appeared to be that the seats were reliant on two single screws not coming loose.

USGA president Fred Perpall, said that staff were out from 8pm Tuesday until 5am Wednesday

A few hours later, however, USGA president Fred Perpall, told DailyMail.com that staff were out on the course from 8pm on Tuesday night until 5am on Wednesday morning.

They checked every single seat on the course, with Perpall claiming that engineers had then signed off the construction.

‘We hope everyone feels safe and whatever mishap happened was isolated,’ Perpall said.

It comes after a social media post appeared to show a Pinehurst member complaining: 'My husband was at the Open and was very concerned about the screws in several grandstands (that) were not fully seated.

‘As a result, numerous screws have failed causing the seat bottoms to drop. All screws should be tightened or there will be people getting hurt.'
