Alaska Airlines flight aborts takeoff after tire blows out in Nashville after nearly colliding with another plane on runway

An Alaska Airlines flight had to abort takeoff after nearly colliding with another plane, causing it to blow out its tires after the pilot slammed on the brakes. 

The incident happened at Nashville International Airport on Thursday when the Seattle-bound plane had to jump on the brakes to avoid a Southwest Airlines jet.

Officials said the Alaska Airlines flight had received clearance for takeoff at the same time that the Jacksonville flight was cleared to cross the same runway. 

Flight information from Flightradar24 indicate that the plane had reached a speed of around 119 mph before the pilots slammed on the brakes, obliterating its tires.

According to Alaskan Airlines nobody was injured in the incident, and they apologized to all 176 passengers on board. 

Following the incident the plane was taxied off the runway and all passengers were deplaned and returned to the airport terminal. 

Southwest Airlines said they are in contact with the Federal Aviation Administration and The National Transportation Safety Board who are probing the incident. 

The airline said: 'Nothing is more important to Southwest than the safety of our customers and employees.' 

According to the NTSB the Alaska Airlines flight was a Boeing 737 Max 9, and the Southwest plane was a Boeing 737-900. 

One passenger onboard, Kyle Forrester, shared footage from the runway showing the jet stopped, and grabbed pictures. 

He posted: 'Grateful our pilot had the reflexes to slam on the brakes so hard it flattened the tires!'

It comes just days after two planes collided on the runway at America's busiest airport. 

The incident took place at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Georgia just after 10am on Tuesday.

The crash occurred after Tokyo-bound flight DL295 clipped the back of flight DL5526 to Louisiana as it was taxiing for takeoff.

The regional jet, an Endeavor Air CRJ-900, was left with a severed tail while the Airbus 350 sustained damage to its wing.

Dramatic photos from witnesses to show the back end of the Louisiana-bound flight bent at a 90 degree angle.

Although there were a reported 277 passengers on board, no injuries were reported as a result of the calamity. 

Footage later emerged showing passengers aboard the aircraft being escorted by crew members after the frightening incident. 

Ground crew can be seen ushering those onboard onto the tarmac, as the camera pans round to show the devastation caused by the incident.

Awaiting buses can also be seen waiting for those who had been onboard at the time of the crash.
