America's most foul-mouthed states revealed - and New Yorkers are not happy

America is the cursing capital of the world as new research shows US-based social media users deploy more curse words than those in any other country. 

And a state-by-state breakdown shows Maryland residents are the biggest culprits for swearing, followed by those in Louisiana, Georgia and Virginia respectively. 

The top ten cursing capitals in the US was rounded out by: Ohio, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, Nevada, New Jersey and Michigan. 

But New York was noticeably absent from the list - compiled by online scrabble game WordTips - surprising local residents.  

'That can’t f***ing be right,' a New Yorker yelled at a street reporter after being told the findings. 

WordTips analyzed 1.7 million geotagged tweets to establish where residents of English-speaking countries swore most.

Its findings showed that Maryland citizens swore in 66.3 tweets per every 1,000 published. 

In Louisiana, this figure was slightly lower at 61.7 per 1,000 tweets.

The study also broke down the cities with the highest incidents of swearing online and found Baltimore made the top. 

Some 78.2 tweets per 1,000 posted from somebody in Baltimore contained a profanity. 

It was followed by Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Atlanta, Georgia, Detroit, Michigan and Houston, Texas.  

'It used to be that the only media you could consume was highly edited. With social media, all of a sudden now we have direct access to people's informal language.' author Benjamin Bergen told WordTips.

'If we have access to people's informal communication and it includes more profanity, that just means we’re going to be exposed to more of it, and that’s going to normalize it, and so people have become inured.'

New York ranked a measly 17 on the list and was lower than Delaware, Michigan, and California. 

One notable New York city that made its mark on the list was Buffalo, scoring a 48.8 per 1,000 tweets, making it the most foul-mouthed area in the state.

Buffalo has been in the news following freedom of speech situations over the years, and a 2016 incident reignited earlier this year.

X users in the US were found to use significantly more swear words than those in other nations. 

On average, 41.6 tweets per every 1,000 posted by American accounts included a swear word.

This figure dropped to 28.6 in the UK, 26.6 in Australia, 25.2 in New Zealand and 24.6 in Canada.
