President Joe Biden has jumped past Donald Trump by two points for the first time since October in the latest Fox News poll, just one week before the first presidential debate ahead of the US elections later this year.

The Fox News poll, which was published on Wednesday, showed that 50% of respondents said they would vote for Biden in November, while 48% would vote for Trump.

It's a one-point improvement for Biden in the poll over last month's figures, where Trump had led by one point.

Biden received the backing of 73% of Black voters. The poll also showed that nearly all partisans remained loyal, as 95% of Democrats have shown their support for Biden while 95% of Republicans are backing Trump.

The poll could show the impact of Trump's recent felony charges earlier this month, after he was found guilty on all 34 counts in a hush money trial, which makes Trump the first US president to be convicted.

He will be sentenced next month.

But other events in the past month can continue impacting voter preferences, such as Hunter Biden's gun trial conviction, a positive US jobs report and Biden's immigration executive order.

When including third-party candidates in the poll, Biden leads Trump by one point - 43% - 42%, while independents Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Cornel West received 10% and 2% respectively.

Green candidate Jill Stein got 2% support. In May, Trump had led the field by three points.

Amongst independent voters, Biden leads Trump by nine points.

'The underlying demographic tendencies that have defined the race remain in place,' said Daron Shaw, who conducted the survey.

'Biden has improved slightly with women and seniors, which keeps him afloat despite significant reductions from 2020 in support from younger voters and African Americans.'

Americans were also more hopeful about the economy, with nearly 32% of respondents saying they have an 'excellent' or 'good' feeling about the economy.

The poll also found Biden has 45% job approval.

Fox News surveys 1,100 registered voters nationwide, with a margin error of around 3%.
