Body language expert reveals the one thing keeping Queen Mary and King Frederik together - as the Danish royals choose to WORK through their 20th wedding anniversary

6 months ago 22

Queen Mary and King Frederik have opted to work through the 20th anniversary of their 'fairytale' wedding by embarking on a royal tour of Norway.

May 14 marks two decades since the couple said 'I do' - but instead of alone time, the couple will be laying a wreath, visiting the Norwegian president of the Storting, and touring the Science City at Oslo.

The couple will spend the evening at a gala dinner which starts at 8pm. The next day is a morning visit to the scenic Ostmarka woodlands, followed by lunch with the prime minister and a tour of the Oslo waterfront.

The tour, the second since they stepped up to the throne, seems at odds with their old 'work hard, play hard' philosophy because it leaves very little time for the couple to reconnect - which is especially important now following reports of marital strain.

Even when King Frederik ascended to the throne he said he would prioritise family and holidays, noting that 'regular breaks are important'.

The royal couple have previously been known to prioritise romantic gestures and holidays

The royal couple's decision to work through the special occasion reflects body language expert Louise Mahler's speculation the 'romance is over'.

Speaking to FEMAIL after the couple's awkward television interview last week, the expert said the only obvious green flag for their relationship is their commitment to  their roles as King and Queen.

'They are not showing any signs of being a couple [romantically],' she said.

'The good news is, here are two people totally committed to their role [as King and Queen] and playing the role as a couple,' she said.

The couple have a very busy schedule on May 14, their anniversary, and the following day

Royal watchers said the couple's choice to work through the big day raised eyebrows across Denmark.

'And then our royal couple will celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary?' one woman wrote on social media after their schedule was published.

'On the King and Queen's wedding day?' questioned another.

The popular royals' 'fairytale romance' has been under the microscope since November 2023 when the then-Crown Prince was spotted 'hanging out' with Mexican socialite Genoveva Casanova in Madrid.

Genoveva vehemently denied any wrongdoing after reports emerged in the European tabloids suggesting the two were having an affair.

The couple's last tour was described as 'awkward' - and a TV interview was labelled the same

But the rumours stuck after a series of photos showing the pair exploring the Spanish city were published.

The photos also appeared to show Frederik heading into Genoveva's apartment, where they spent two hours before heading out for dinner.

Since the alleged affair, the royal Instagram account has received thousands of comments condemning King Frederik and idolising Queen Mary.

Every photograph of the royal couple taken since news of the alleged affair broke has been speculated on.

'How dare you hurt Mary,' one woman said.

'She holds her head so high, he won't even look at her,' said another.

Dr Louise Mahler's observations echo some of the comments.

She says the couple appear to be very guarded when they are in each other's company - where they were once tactile and relaxed.

'It can be that after so many years, this is understandable, but given previous tactile behaviour and the rumours before the coronation, one senses a challenge in their relationship,' she said.

The Australian-born Queen has been caught on camera with a scowl in the months since, replacing the radiant smile she used to wear.

The couple met at the Slip Inn in Sydney during the 2000 summer Olympics. Queen Mary moved to Denmark, dropped her Australian and UK citizenships and learned the language.

Dr Louise Mahler says their recent 'loving moments' have been for show and notes they often use arms and legs to block each other out and tilt their heads away from each other

She got the tick of approval from Queen Margrethe, married the young Prince Frederik and went on to have four children with him before their 'perfect' public image was damaged by the enduring affair rumours.

The couple will tour to the Faroe Islands in mid-June and Greenland in late June running through to early July.
