New parents have sparked fiery controversy after they reprimanded a friend for claiming she wanted to use the same baby name as them when she got pregnant in the future.

The unnamed woman, who goes by @Mrs. Gravy on X, formerly known as Twitter, took to social media to detail the shocking message she received from her pal who had just become a dad.

She explained that while having dinner with the new parents, she gushed over their chosen baby name - which she didn't reveal - and even noted that she had the name in mind when she had a child of her own.

However, her compliment sparked a wave of backlash from the parents as they claimed she was 'rude' while simultaneously accusing her of trying to 'steal' the moniker.

The message ignited an untamed dispute about baby names and whether they can be reused.

Mrs. Gravy's post read: 'A family friend brought his wife to dinner last night. They just had a baby a few months ago and I was telling them how much I love their baby's name and if I ever had a third daughter that would probably be her name too. Just woke up to a text from this man saying I was rude.'

She explained that while at dinner she raved about the name and even revealed that she had it on her list of desired baby names in the past.

The baffled woman added that she was taken aback by the message because she meant it as a compliment and had no plans to have more children anytime soon.

The social media user said: 'He said his wife was offended by that because I was making it about me and I told her I would be stealing her baby name lmfao.

'First of all I'm not even pregnant or planning a pregnancy at this point, second of all I don't know if I'll ever have a third daughter. Also a name can't be stolen.

'I have had all my future children's names chosen since I was 18! I'm literally just going to pretend he didn't text me that because what the f*** am I supposed to say?'

She admitted that the message left her so furious that she wanted to complain to her parents about it so that the new mom and dad could never be invited out with her family again.

The unnamed woman took to social media to detail the shocking message she received from her pal who had just become a dad as people took her side

'It really takes everything in me to not be like, "rude? I'll show you rude," like I could show that text to my parents and you'll never be invited out with us ever again but I won't because I'm nice,' she said before claiming that the new mom should 'get a grip.'

The string of admissions prompted a savage debate to erupt as people on the web took sides on whether or not you could claim a name.

Many readers took the social media user's side and expressed their shock at the new parent's behavior.

One person said: 'I've heard of this before and it's always so funny when the name is like... Jennifer.'

Someone else wrote: 'People are ridiculous about name ownership.'

Another user added: 'Weird that they didn't take it as a compliment.'

However, other people on the web claimed that the social media was in the wrong as they slammed her for her comment

'Ridiculous. It was a compliment. She liked it so much she considered the name for her own potential child,' one person commented.

Someone else added: 'Right a name can’t be stolen because that would mean the original person didn’t have their name anymore.'

However, other people on the web claimed that the social media was in the wrong as they slammed her for her comment.

One person said: 'Well you're trying to take the name. I get it.'

Another user added: 'You're so weird, just pick another name.'

Someone else wrote: 'Very weird.'

'It is definitely a weird thing to say to a new mom,' one user commented.
