Carnival Cruise Line has warned guests not to get too comfortable on their room's balcony.

While having sex and smoking marijuana are blatantly frowned upon, a Carnival Cruise representative reminded guests that a more tame activity - hanging laundry out to dry - is also harshly prohibited on cruise ships' balconies.

Facebook personality Jayson Judson shared a video including statement from Carnival Ambassador John Heald about taking cruise ship laundry liberties.

'Carnival Cruise Line has issued a warning to passengers that hanging a clothesline to dry your clothes isn't permitted on your balcony as two pictures were sent to John Heald, the brand ambassador for Carnival Cruise Line,' the video narrator said.

'John said that cabin attendants will remove them due to environmental concerns and that it simply looks bad.'

The video went on to say that Carnival offers guests washers and dryers onboard. There are also places inside of one's room to hang wet laundry.

On Carnival's website, it has been made clear that 'for safety concerns clothing and towels should not be hung to dry on your balcony.'

Heald's statement, which he shared on Facebook in response to guests hanging up clothes on balconies, reads: 'No, this is absolutely not allowed for very, very important safety reasons and I know that once the cabin attendants come to the cabin that morning they will be removed.'

Strong winds can blow clothing items into the ocean. If the clothes do not fly away, they may be damaged by the salty sea air, according to GlobalEat

Under Judson's video, people chimed into the discussion of cruise ship laundry etiquette.

'A clothesline looks tacky. An item or 2 on the back of a chair is alright if attached securely,' one user wrote.

Another agreed: 'Looks really bad, don’t be cheap people just pay the laundry fee.'

But some people thought this rule was overkill and a bit unnecessary. 'Who's looking? LOL,' someone said.

Another wrote: 'I think people should check themselves and mind their own beeswax, cruising isn't just for people with butlers and maids anymore, families with young kids need to hustle. I get the environmental concern, though.'

Aside from laundry, the ambassador has addressed some other cruise ship behaviors that will simply not be tolerated by Carnival.

In November, 2024, Heald revealed that no upside down pineapples are allowed on guest's rooms.

If seen by cruise staff, the symbol - which is notoriously used by swingers - will be taken down from doors, he said in a Facebook comment.

He wrote that the upside down pineapples are 'definitely no longer allowed on the ships and they will be removed from any cabin door.'

Carnival ships are drug free zones, according to the popular cruise line. Smoking in general is limited to specific areas and if guests can be fined $500 if they are caught smoking on their balcony.

Marijuana products are not even allowed onboard cruise ships and passengers who violate this rule face the possibility of getting banned from Carnival cruises for life, TheStreet reported.

When it comes to other 'adult activities' it is a given that guests should think twice.

Cruise Critic contributor Marissa Wright pointed out that private time on a cruise ship balcony is not nearly as private as one my believe.

'Nearby balconies, people in port and even security cameras may have a clear view,' she wrote.

Wright also argued that having sex on a balcony in the middle of the ocean could be dangerous and put someone at risk for falling off the boat.
