The father of a six-year-old girl killed in a freak badminton accident has shared heartbreaking details about the day she died, including her poignant final journal entries.

Lucy Morgan passed away on June 5, just days after sustaining the traumatic brain injury during a family vacation in Maine.

Her pastor father Jesse Morgan had been documenting her battle ever since she was airlifted to the Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Tragically, she slipped away surrounded by her family shortly afterwards, who gathered at her bedside to sing her favorite hymn.

Now the distraught dad has revealed he and his wife Bethany and their three other children were so overcome by grief they could not go back into their own home.

The father of Lucy Morgan, 6, who was killed in a freak badminton accident has shared more heartbreaking details about the day she died, including her poignant final journal entries

Father Jesse Morgan revealed he and his wife Bethany and their three other children were so overcome by grief they could not go back into their own home

'When we got home we arrived to flowers lining our steps and a fridge stocked with food. But entering was the hardest thing,' he wrote on his blog.

'We just sat on the front steps for a while crying until I finally mustered up the courage to open the door.

'We again collapsed in a pile on the kitchen floor crying harder as a family than we ever have.'

The deeply religious family have been comforted in their loss by their faith and Morgan shared that his daughter had asked her mom how to be 'saved' just weeks before her death.

'Despite my conviction that she is still young and possibly can’t understand, and that she had the faith of a mustard seed, Bethany still couldn’t shake the fear and doubt,' he explained.

'It was then when we opened her backpack and found her prayer journal that Bethany had given her a month ago to the day of her passing.'

The pages contain affirmations of Lucy's faith, pictures and a heartbreaking final drawing which her sister Shiloh believes shows Mary and Martha weeping over the body of Lazarus.

In the bible story, Lazarus  of Bethany is resurrected by Jesus four days after his death.

But they took comfort in their faith and that of their daughter's which was evidenced in final journal entries. They  believe this picture depicts the resurrection of Lazarus

The young family were enjoying an idyllic lakeside vacation in Maine when the tragedy occurred

'This last picture takes the cake. The significance of it being the very last thing she drew in the journal cannot be understated,' Morgan said. 'It’s hard to put into words how deeply I feel about it.'

But he was unflinching in his honesty about the brutality of the situation, as he described his wife's anguish on the day Lucy passed.

'On June 4, the morning of the day Lucy was predicted to pass, it was very hard to distinguish the groans and cries I heard from Bethany at 3am that morning from the ones I heard on the morning of September 4 2017 when Bethany birthed Lucy,' he wrote.

'The pain of a mother in this situation is so incredibly unique, heavy, and frankly awe inspiring to witness.'

He described the agony of attempting to explain the situation to Lucy's three young siblings.

But also their attempts to find light amongst the darkness by doing some of her favorite things including playing games together.

The family was enjoying an idyllic vacation when tragedy struck, he explained on his blog.

'Bethany and I were relaxing in the back when we heard screaming,' he said.

Lucy was airlifted by helicopter to Portland where she suffered a cardiac arrest as surgeons removed part of her skull to relieve pressure on her brain

The four children had enjoyed a week of kayaking and outdoor activities before the accident

'Due to a freak accident with a racquet that broke on a downward swing, a sharp piece had entered Lucy’s skull while she was sitting on the sideline and caused catastrophic injury.'

Lucy immediately became unresponsive and was whisked to the hospital where she later died.

Her funeral will take place at 11am ET on Saturday and will be live-streamed at www.greenpondbible.org.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help support the family.
