EXCLUSIVE: Hard-left activists Code Pink's history of Israel-bashing revealed: Anti-war feminist group that's under congressional scrutiny over ties to Chinese Communist Party has a record of links to Iran, Hamas and 'antisemitism'

1 year ago 17

The hard-left Code Pink activists who face congressional scrutiny over their links to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) also have longstanding sympathies with Iran and Hamas and a record of bashing Israel, DailyMail.com can reveal.

House Republicans have in recent weeks launched a probe against the outspoken, anti-war group to find out whether its leaders take Beijing's money and in return spread CCP propaganda.

Against this backdrop, DailyMail.com spoke to observers who have tracked Code Pink's activities these past two decades, and found that members have sympathized with other despotic regimes globally.

Code Pink leaders have attended a conference with Holocaust deniers in Iran, helped Hamas spread its concerns, and used an antisemitic slur about influential, rich Jewish people pulling the strings in Washington, DC.

Code Pink's past contacts with Hamas are particularly worrisome in the wake of the armed Islamists' rampage through southern Israel on October 7, where they raped, murdered and kidnapped hundreds of people, mostly civilians.

Code Pink, which denies taking money from Beijing, did not answer our request for comment.

Rabbi Abraham Cooper, from the Simon Wiesenthal Center, a Jewish rights group, said Code Pink's 'extremist agenda' included cutting US military aid to Israel and letting exiled Palestinians back in to the Jewish state.

He said the group's support for a boycott of Israel, known as BDS, was 'antisemitic.'

'They are an over-the-top group that calls for social and policy changes that would change the face of the United States,' Cooper told DailyMail.com.

'Insofar as Israel is concerned, they would lead to Israel's destruction, without any question.'

Founded by Jodie Evans, Medea Benjamin and other anti-war feminists in 2002, Code Pink stages protests, disrupts meetings and heckles politicians in an effort to end 'US imperialism.'

They've interrupted speeches by everyone from Barack Obama to the late Senator John McCain.

Code Pink presented Hamas' deadly rampage in Israel on October 7 as an act of 'resistance'

Critics say their anti-Americanism has seen them get worryingly cozy with other countries and groups with a history of human rights abuse around the world.

At a Code Pink rally in 2015 against Israel's US lobbying group in the US, known as Aipac, one protester displayed the flag of Hezbollah, an Iran-backed terrorist-cum-political group.

The previous year, founder Benjamin attended the New Horizon conference in Tehran, Iran's capital.

The meeting was the brainchild of Iran's hard-line former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Other attendees included anti-Israel activists and such Holocaust-denying conspiracy theorists as Kevin Barret and Claudio Moffa.

Panel sessions covered everything from Israel's lobbying machine in the US to 'Mossad's Role in the 9/11 Coup,' documents from the conference said in a reference to Israel's spy agency.

The meeting was panned at the time for antisemitism.

The US-based Anti-Defamation League, a Jewish campaign group, said Iran's mullahs had co-opted Code Pink and other US activists to spread an anti-Israel message.

The US Treasury in 2019 slapped sanctions on the conference organizers, New Horizon, citing its ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

It was one of several trips Code Pink members made to Iran and other Middle Eastern destinations.

Code Pink members were in 2015 campaigning for peace with Iran, which was understood to be developing nuclear weapons

Ann Wright, a former Army colonel and US diplomat and who sits on the group's board, was interviewed while aboard a ship headed to Gaza in 2010.

She used risqué language about Jewish money.

'The tail wags the dog,' Wright told the interviewer. 'There are powerful influences in the United States, key Jewish persons with lots of money, who use that that money and influence to influence our US Congress,' she added.

For some, linking Jewish people with money is an antisemitic canard.

The previous year, Tighe Barry and dozens of other Code Pink members visited Gaza.

There, they 'met several times with Hamas officials,' according to the group's website.

They urged the Islamists to write a letter about the suffering of Palestinians to then-president Obama.

The Hamas letter praised Code Pink as a 'grassroots peace group'.

The Hamas official who wrote it said the Islamists sought a 'just resolution' to the Israel-Palestine conflict, and urged Obama to visit Gaza.

Other Hamas officials routinely call for Israel's destruction.

Code Pink's record with Hamas is especially pertinent in the wake of their deadly raids on farms, villages, and a music festival in southern Israel last month.

The bloody rampage left 1,200 people, mostly civilians, dead, and 240 others taken hostage.

Israel's retaliatory strikes against Hamas have left some 15,000 people dead and led to swaps of hostages for Palestinians in Israeli jails.

On the day of the attack, Benjamin, a Jewish American, appeared to justify them as 'resistance' against an 'occupying force.'

'The Israeli government can't keep two million trapped in an open air prison in Gaza and not expect resistance,' she posted on X/Twitter.

For Lawrence Peck, an advisor to the North Korea Freedom Coalition, it was the latest sign that Code Pink had gone off the rails.

'Code Pink and its key leaders have for years been notorious for variously supporting, defending and making excuses for some of the world's most murderous dictatorships, terrorist groups, and Jew-haters,' Peck told DailyMail.com.

Code Pink has been one of the main organizers of protests against Israel's military retaliation in Gaza, saying the US should stop giving the Jewish state arms that it uses to commit war crimes.

Millions of Americans are also alarmed by the suffering of blameless Palestinians under Israel's fierce military operations against Hamas, stoking divisions between those who support and oppose the campaign.

This has also provoked a debate about whether criticizing Israel's actions, or questioning the legitimacy of the Zionist quest for a Jewish homeland, amounts to antisemitism.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer in an opinion article on Wednesday warned that 'many Americans are exploiting arguments against Israel and leaping toward a virulent antisemitism.'

Code Pink did not answer our requests for comment.

They have rejected claims of taking money to spread CCP propaganda as 'ludicrous.'

House Republicans in November launched a probe into Code Pink co-founder Jodie Evans and her husband Neville Roy Singham over their financial and ideological ties to the CCP.

Singham, a Connecticut-born tech entrepreneur and self-proclaimed socialist and mega-wealthy benefactor of 'far-left causes,' is based in Shanghai, China.

A letter, signed by 10 GOP members of the Natural Resources Committee, said they are 'deeply concerned' with Code Pink's ties to the CCP, and probing whether it has illegally failed to register as a foreign agent.

They requested all communications between Code Pink, Singham and the CCP between 2017 and today.

They also asked for any documents related to transactions between Code Pink and any foreign entity and proof of whether or not Code Pink registered as a foreign agent.

A damning New York Times report in August revealed Singham 'works closely with the Chinese government media machine and is financing its propaganda worldwide.'

The report tracked hundreds of millions of dollars to groups that 'mix progressive advocacy with Chinese government talking points.'

Code Pink, meanwhile, has shifted its stance on China since Evans and Singham married in 2017.

The group once criticized China's human rights record and treatment of its Muslim Uyghur minority.

It now has a campaign listed entitled 'China is Not our Enemy.'

'The US is heading towards a dangerous confrontation with China,' the Code Pink site reads.

'Mounting hostilities are stopping us from addressing existential challenges like the climate crisis.'

Evans, after she married Singham, has adopted a much more pro-China stance

Code Pink frequently disrupts congressional proceedings

It adds: 'The US believes they can win a nuclear war against China and is preparing for war. One of those preparations is to manipulate the mind of US citizens to support this war, which threatens our society, as much as China and the rest of the world.'

Evans, 68, managed the presidential campaign of California Gov. Jerry Brown in 1992 and heavily involved in Democratic circles. After the Iraq War began, she rededicated herself to activism, forming Code Pink with Benjamin.

She soon became known for donning hot pink outfits and heading to Capitol Hill for disruptive demonstrations that often ended in arrest.

And until a handful of years ago, she criticized China without hesitation.

'We demand China stop brutal repression of their women's human rights defenders,' she posted to Twitter in 2015.

But since her marriage in 2017, around a quarter of Code Pink's donations, more than $1.7 million, have come from Singham's groups.

Evans is now an ardent defender of China.

When former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi traveled to Taiwan in 2022, Evans tweeted: 'This would be an irresponsible act of war! The pentagon generals are begging her not to go. Who are 300m US to dictate to 1.5 billion and break a One China agreement? Are you that arrogant?'

Singham made his money though his software consulting company, Thoughtworks, which he launched in 1993 in Chicago.

He sold it to private equity firm Apax Partners for $785 million.

Singham shares an office in Shangai with a Chinese media company called Maku Group, which appears to be dedicated to producing foreign propaganda.

Singham claims he does not work with the Chinese government, but a network he owns is co-producing a YouTube show with China's propaganda department and working with a Chinese university to 'spread China's voice throughout the world.'

Singham's groups work on behalf of Chinese interests by producing YouTube videos that have racked up millions of views, meeting with congressional aides, running candidates in African elections and organizing protests.

None of Singham's nonprofits have registered under the Foreign Agents Registration Act, as is required for groups that peddle ideas on behalf of a foreign government.
