The Libertines's Pete Doherty and bandmate Carl Barât recalled a difficult period in the group's history in emotional scenes for Louis Theroux latest documentary.

Pete, 44, who has struggled publicly with drug addiction, said he was 'in the honeymoon period with crack and heroin' which led to him being excluded from the band before breaking into Carl's flat.

Telling Louis: 'They were doing these gigs without me, they did Glastonbury without me and  I went round [to his home] to beg him to say "I know you are worried about the drugs but please don't carry on without me"'.

Carl then revealed how his pal's spiralling addiction had made it impossible for him to continue with the band's schedule and commitments.

Peter, who is now healthy and happily married to filmmaker Katia de Vidas,  explained how he had kicked open his friend's front door in a desperate bid to stay in the group, only to discover nobody was home.

Hugging it out: Pete, 44, who has struggled publicly with drug addiction, said he was 'in the honeymoon period with crack and heroin' which led to him being excluded from the band before breaking into Carl's flat

Admitting: 'I acted really stupidly and took some videos and stuff'.

During that period Carl was performing in Japan in what he called the 'guilt tour' without Pete, and suffering from his own addiction issues.

'People kept saying to me, your friend is going off the rails, he needs help, "You can't let him do this" "You can't let him do that" but you've seen the man, he's a law unto himself'.

Adding: 'But I knew I had to keep the band together and I knew we had these commitments, and Pete was running round with this new crew and I felt like he was getting away from me'.

'I felt like I was breaking out bond, our pack, everything we had sworn in blood together and although Pete says he got kicked out the band that was never the case, but of course he didn't see it that way'.

Struggling to hold back tears Carl continued: 'It was quite heartbreaking really both romantics and there's just f*** you can do about it really'.

An equally emotional Pete, who has since mended his relationship with Carl and is back performing with the band, then pulled his pal into an embrace and hugged as they forgave each other for their actions.

Honest and open: Pete (R) is the latest star to be interviewed by Louis Theroux (L) for his BBC series

Filmed over 10 years, Peter Doherty: Stranger In My Own Skin delves into the moment Pete realised he had a heroin addiction as he confesses he smuggled heroin into Japan in his guitar case.

Speaking in the film, he says: 'Hard drugs entered my life and slowly, slowly, and then very quickly, took control.'

He took heroin for the first time in 2002 when he was just 23, yet the addiction didn't fully take hold until he found himself sweating and sick after a plane journey to Japan.

After landing Pete took the heroin he had smuggled into the country and described the hit as an instant 'bing'.

'I felt on top of the world, felt a million dollars. I went down to the lobby, like, ‘Right, what’s going on?’ Everyone was like, "Oh Pete, you look really well".'

Yet Pete's addiction led to him having multiple run ins with the law and the rockstar was in and out of prison.

Now, the singer, who dated Kate Moss between 2005 to 2007, has turned his life around and is clean, living in Normandy with his wife Katia and their five-month-old daughter Billie-May.

Yet it was a hard journey to get there, and the documentary shows raw scenes of the frontman smoking crack cocaine and preparing to inject heroin.

Footage shows him pulling a black band around his arm as he melts the drug on a spoon above a flame, telling Katia: 'The one thing I’m not scared of is death. I’m scared of everything else.'

His drug use had a detrimental effect on his relationships as he previously described his relationship with Kate Moss in his memoir A Likely Lad, as a 'running battle' full of 'highs and then crushing, violent lows'.

He also didn't speak to his father for eight years during the height of his addiction.

After numerous attempts to get clean, which included him selling a painting smeared with his blood and that of his late pal Amy Winehouse sold for £35,000, Pete eventually headed to rehab.

He eventually went to Thailand’s Hope Rehab in September 2014 and began to turn his life around.

Louis Theroux Interviews is on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer at 9pm Tuesday November 14.
