Mushrooms are not just for cooking as it seems they can be a secret weapon against wayward hair.

Tech company Dyson, known for bagless vacuum cleaners and bladeless fans, has come up with the idea as it moves into the beauty products market.

It is using fungal chitosan, from the cell walls of oyster mushrooms, as the active ingredient in hair serum.

Researchers have found that chitosan, which is already popular in skincare, can also tame frizzy hair.

Each bottle of the product named after its star ingredient contains the equivalent of up to eight oyster mushrooms. Chitosan will be available in Dyson stores and online from tomorrow costing from £50

The substance creates bonds which support each strand individually, giving users a 'delicate yet strong' flexible hold.

Company founder Sir James Dyson told The Guardian: 'The complex macromolecule helps create flexible bonds that support hair strand by strand, for twice the hold, with movement and shine.'

The firm has ventured into haircare with the Supersonic hairdryer and the Airwrap styling tool. It is not alone in looking to fungi with mushroom-based items more common in the health and beauty sectors.
