A pilot has been killed after a single-engine plane crashed and burst into flames near a diner and nail salon in Texas.

The horrifying moment was captured in videos showing the aircraft engulfed in fire near a shopping center in Plano.

The FAA reported the Mooney M20 crashed next to Mama's Daughter's Diner and Nail Addiction at around 6pm on Tuesday.

Authorities confirmed the pilot, who lost their life during the fiery crash, was the only person on board the plane. The victim has not been named.

'Thankfully, the plane did not actually land on or collide with anything,' said Plano Fire-Rescue Public Information Officer Daniel Daly.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the single-engine Mooney M20 crashed next to Mama's Daughter's Diner and Nail Addiction at around 6pm Tuesday

Emergency crews rushed to the crash site, located less than an half-mile from the Air Park-Dallas Airport.

The deadly plane crash also set an empty van nearby on fire, but none of the nearby businesses incurred any damage.

'We do not know where the aircraft was destined, whether they were going to this landing strip that is really close or Addison,' said Daly.

'We don't really have that information right now. Again, any flight plans or any information is going to be FAA or NTSB.'

Plano Fire-Rescue would not speculate as to the plane's flight path, and it's unclear if the pilot was flying in or out of the Air Park-Dallas Airport.

Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board will arrive on scene Wednesday morning and handle the situation with the FAA, authorities said.

Meanwhile, the plane will stay at the scene until federal investigators decide to move it to a secure location for further evaluation.

Most stores nearby were still open when the plane crashed, as witnesses reported hearing a loud boom and seeing big smoke after the deadly incident.

'When I came out there was a lot of smoke and later I heard a noise again,' Kiu Nguyen told CBS. 'It was so scary. Everybody came and saw a lot of smoke.'

'It was the blackest smoke I have ever seen. It looked really terrifying from across the way,' Liz Blice, another witness in the neighborhood, said. 'I couldn't see anybody that was hurt.'

Kevin Holigan was about to head into Mama's Daughter's Diner when the crash took place.

'The flames were so high that I couldn't even make it out,' he said. 'All I could see was the original fire and the car next to it on fire.'

Austin Selkin told FOX4: 'It was just flames everywhere, it was really bad.' A video from him shows crews putting out a fire in the nearby van.
