Video footage has captured the horrifying moment a man creeped up behind a woman before knocking her unconscious in a viscous broad daylight attack.

An unidentified woman fell victim to the violent assault in downtown Dallas on Thursday afternoon in what authorities describe as an apparently 'unprovoked attack.'

The incident occurred around 1:15pm at the bustling intersection of Elm Street and Field Street.

The video, captured by Security footage from The Drakestone apartments, revealed the terrifying moment the unsuspecting woman was approached by the suspect while she was standing at the corner.

A man swiftly approached her from behind and without warning, he struck her in the head with what appears to be a pole.

The force of the blow caused the woman to collapse instantly.

The suspect then casually walks off like nothing happened.

She was transported to the hospital. The woman's condition is unknown at this time.

Downtown Dallas, Inc. reported that their security officers were quick to respond, arriving at the scene within minutes of the assault.

The organization's President and CEO, Jennifer Scripps, expressed her shock regarding the unprovoked attack.

We're horrified by this unprovoked attack,' Scripps told CBS News. 'We are praying for the victim's recovery and working with law enforcement to locate the attacker.'

'Our partners at Dallas City Hall share in our outrage, and we will work together to ensure downtown remains a safe place for all residents, workers and visitors,' she added. 'We have zero tolerance for violent crime.'

Noah Robertson, a witness who lives in the area, told Fox4 he never saw anything like it.

'I've never seen somebody just hit somebody and walk away like nothing happened, especially someone who at least appears to not know the other person,' he told the outlet.

'That lady is just standing there, and that guy hits her for like absolutely no reason. That's crazy,' Robertson said.

'Downtown is usually pretty cool,' he added. 'But I have seen some crazy stuff down here. It gets wild down here at night, for sure.'

The investigation is ongoing.
