Huge police presence in New York's Lower East Side after man 'barricades himself in apartment with a gun'

A huge police presence is out in Manhattan's lower east side after reports of an armed man who barricaded himself in an apartment. 

Footage from the scene at Eldridge St posted on the Citizen app shows several NYPD officers with long guns surrounding a building. 

The NYPD told DailyMail.com there was an officer-involved shooting, but could not provide additional details at the time. 

Police said: 'Due to a police investigation, please avoid the area of Eldridge St. between Rivington St. and Stanton St.'

University Settlement, which provides education and social services, said one of its buildings at 184 Eldridge St has to be entered from the south due to the police activity.
