A Memphis, Tennessee, Burger King that went up in flames now serves as a trash-covered homeless encampment and drug den - and community members are completely outraged.
Blankets, pillows, shopping arts, bikes and two toilets are strewn across the property. The building itself has been vandalized with graffiti.
A person and their dog are reportedly living in the dumpster, according to WREG.
People who live in the area surrounding the vacant Burger King or go to the nearby businesses have strong opinions about the situation.
A burnt-down Burger King in Memphis now serves as a homeless encampment
The Burger King closed last years after a fire, but now garbage, shopping carts and more clutter the property
Tony Myers, who lives close by, told WREG: 'It's terrible. I just live right around the corner and call the police and say "I see them doing drugs an bringing in stolen goods."
'They'll tell me "we'll go over there and see, but there is nothing we can do about it."'
Myers told the outlet that he has called the police multiple times within the past month, but no actions have been taken.
The owner of the animal hospital next door to the Burger King, Dr Bill Conley, said that his patrons are equally upset about the encampment and have tried to get the city involved.
The garage-filled encampment has been complained about to the city at least three times this month
Memphis received at least three formal complaints about the Burger King this past month alone.
The property owner has been notified by code enforcement that the property is going to be cleared at the owner's expense and that its current state is a violation, according to WREG.
Myers told WREG: 'That sounds good. That’s very good. I’ve been here 25 years, and I’ve been doing everything I can to get the neighborhood straightened out.'
Locals like Conley are curious about what the future holds.
Conley told WREG: 'I feel sorry for the people. They sometimes hang out under the awning at the hospital.
'I don’t know what the franchise plans to do with the building. I would have thought they would have reopened it by now.'
The Burger King, located in Berclair, caught on fire last October about an hour after the store had closed.
Two toilet bowls and other clutter sit by the Burger King as the city claims they are going to clean it up
Another Burger King in Seattle, has a similar story. Last year, KOMO news reported the store had shut down after a fire and then became a homeless encampment.
The property became occupied by RVs, tents and cars.
People living in the area were concerned about crime rates and there connection to the encampment's emergence.
Developers plan to turn the Seattle property into low-incoming housing. The Urban League is the organization behind the decision, according to their website.
