A Nebraska high school was placed on lockdown Tuesday morning after a gunman shot a student in the stomach before fleeing the scene.

Police and helicopters were scrambled to the area at Northwest High School in Omaha, with police later saying the suspect was taken into custody.

The victim was identified as a 15-year-old student at the school, who was hospitalized in critical condition, reports KETV

Early reports indicated that police described the gunman as 'young', however no description of the suspect was given as the Omaha Police Department announced the arrest and said there was no longer a 'threat to the community.'

Police announced that they had a suspect in custody roughly 30 minutes after the lockdown, as parents and student convened at a reunification area

Following the shooting, nearby Marian High School and Roncalli Catholic High School were also placed on lockdown.

Authorities said the lockdowns would remain in place until the active shooter situation is over and the suspect is in custody, which lasted roughly 30 minutes.

A reunification area has reportedly been set up at the high school's football stadium for parents to reach their children.

It comes days after Apalachee High School in Georgia suffered the worst school shooting in the state's history when 14-year-old student Colt Gray allegedly opened fire on 13 people, killing four.
