A powerful House Republican has been accused of having an affair before filing for divorce from his wife of 36 years.

Camie Green, who was married to House Homeland Security Committee chairman Rep. Mark Green (R-Tenn), accused him of having a relationship with a younger women before their split.

In a statement on the salacious claims, 59-year-old Green said on Friday: 'This is a difficult time for my family and me, and we are currently going through divorce proceedings.

'As this is a deeply private matter, I ask for privacy. I will continue to serve this district with all I’ve got, as I have the last five and a half years.'

The allegations surfaced in a message on a group chat sent by Green's estranged wife that has been seen by DailyMail.com and since shared around Capitol Hill.

In the messages she said she'd tried to reconcile their marriage, but the Congressman wanted nothing to do with it.

'Satan has rewritten our marriage in his mind. I am being quite open about this as 1) I cherish the prayer of any who are willing and 2) I want to make others aware of how readily available "predators" are for our husbands.'

The identity of the woman, believed to be in her thirties, has not yet been revealed.

Green's wife initially identified her as a reporter, but that has been confirmed as false.

The scorned Mrs Green then went on to make more general accusations against male lawmakers and said they become 'intoxicated with power and adoration'.

In an email published by the Nashville Banner, Camie calls out 'predators' lurking among DC's powerbrokers.

'I want to make others aware of how readily available "predators" are for our husbands. If my story can prevent this tragedy from happening to someone else, I will tell it,' it says.
