Soccer stars show their support for USWNT's Kristie Mewis and her Aussie fiancee Sam Kerr as pair show off engagement ring for the first time in intimate proposal shots

Two of the top stars from the 2023 Women’s World Cup have revealed intimate photos from their recent engagement, prompting a wave of well wishing from across the soccer world.

Australia’s Sam Kerr is seen dropping to one knee in front of her elated fiancee, US national team star Kristie Mewis, in the first slide of their Instagram post. In another photo, an animated Kerr is seen triumphantly raising her right arm after apparently getting the answer she was looking for.

The Instagram post also contains a photo of Mewis’ diamond engagement ring: an oval-cut, single-stone claw setting perched atop a yellow gold band.

No location is given, but the couple appears to be in front of a Mediterranean palazzo in some warm-weather destination. The caption does contain a date, September 1, indicating the couple has been engaged for nearly three months now. Kerr and Mewis confirmed their engagement earlier this month, but photos of the latter’s proposal hadn’t surfaced until Tuesday.

The post received thousands of replies, many of which were written by the couple’s club and national teammates.

Australia’s Ellie Carpenter, Mackenzie Arnold, Tameka Yallop, Emily Gielnik, and Clare Wheeler wished the couple their best, as did the Matildas team account.

Similarly, Kerr’s Chelsea teammates also responded offering congrats, including English national team players Millie Bright, Erin Cuthbert, and Lauren James.

Mewis’ American teammates also got in on the party, including Catarina Macario, who also plays for Chelsea alongside Kerr.

Many of the response were simple emojis. The USWNT, for instance, responded with a string of blue hearts.

Somewhat surprisingly, it was Australia’s Kerr who advanced furthest at the 2023 World Cup in her home country, as the Matildas finished fourth.

The defending-champion USWNT fell to Sweden in penalties in the Round of 16, leading to Vlatko Andonovski’s dismissal as head coach. Mewis did connect on one penalty, but Sweden made their final three to advance.

Kerr currently plays for Chelsea, who are being managed until the end of the season by the next USWNT manager, Emma Hayes. Mewis, meanwhile, is coming off an NWSL title with Gotham FC.

The 30-year-old Mewis previously shared the happy news with People magazine, thanking Kerr for standing by her side.

'[She's] my biggest supporter, always listening to me nag and complain all, all of my crazy antics,' she said.

Rumors have been rife that Kerr and Mewis were engaged after Australia's biggest soccer star posted a photo to social media showing her wearing a gold ring on her wedding finger in September.

The Matildas striker included the shot in an Instagram post accompanied by the simple caption 'September people x' with two other images showing a jeweled ring on the left ring finger of her girlfriend Mewis.

Well wishes poured in from around the soccer world, including several notable Matildas

Images taken on Kerr's birthday, September 10, also appeared to show Mewis hiding her ring finger.

The pair celebrated Kerr's 30th birthday with a photo of their dinner showing the Aussie with her hand wrapped around Mewis' waist - and the American's left hand carefully positioned to avoid showing any ring.

'Happy Birthday my love,' she captioned the post.

Fans were also given a glimpse at the ring on Mewis' hand in an accidental sneak peek when Mewis featured in a promotional clip for the EA FC 24 video game in mid-September. Mewis' left hand appeared to be obscured on purpose in recent photos of the couple as the speculation reached fever pitch.

Fans called the photo of Kerr sporting the gold band a 'soft engagement launch', with one writing, 'Ahahah the ring congrats Sam' and another asking, 'So where's the proposal vid?'

Matildas superstar Sam Kerr and her long-term girlfriend Kristie Mewis have confirmed they are engaged. Mewis, 30, shared the happy news with People magazine on Friday, calling Kerr her 'biggest supporter'. Pictured together

Mewis followed up with a post to her Instagram story earlier the same month, showing what looks to be her hand holding Kerr's.

Once again, most of the fingers on Mewis' left hand cannot be seen in the photo - leading some to think she might have been hiding a ring.

The couple met while they were both playing for competing clubs in the US league in 2019.

They spoke online for almost four months during the 2020 COVID lockdown before spending two weeks in quarantine together, where they quickly fell in love.

November 2021 marked the first time the pair - who last met competitively at the Tokyo Olympics - had played against each other since going 'Instagram official' in August that year

The pair continued their romance in the lead-up to the Olympics in 2021 where - following America's defeat of Australia in the semifinals - they were photographed together.

Their on-pitch embrace made headlines as Kerr's break-up from her former longtime partner - another US club player, Nikki Stanton - had not yet become public.

November 2021 marked the first time the pair had played against each other since going 'Instagram official' in August that year.

Their cross-global romance has since been heavily documented on social media with both women amassing hundreds of thousands of followers.

'We're not private people. I like sharing my story. I like sharing who I am outside of football' Kerr told UK publication Gaffer earlier this year.

'Football is 5 percent of my life' she added.

Kerr and Mewis are the undisputed power couple of women's football and the pair have amassed thousands of followers since their relationship has blossomed.

Kerr previously dated long-time girlfriend Nikki Stanton for almost eight years before quietly splitting in 2021.

It's understood Kerr told friends at the time that she and Stanton, who is also a high-profile American footballer in her own right, had 'fallen out of love'.

Kerr reportedly ended their long-term romance abruptly in the lead-up to the Tokyo Games.
