An Australian mum has shocked the internet after revealing the disgusting truth of having carpeted floors.

The Queensland woman was stunned when she used a carpet shampooer and found layers of filth lurking beneath the 'clean' exterior.

She has two dogs, a cat, and a toddler - and shared that she had brand new carpets fitted only 18 months ago.

The mum vacuums regularly and never expected her floors to still hold so much dirt, dust, hair, and animal fur.

While it is recommended to get your carpet professionally washed at least once a year, you can use steam cleaner every week or once a fortnight to keep your home as clean as possible.

The mum revealed she recently bought a Tineco Carpet One pro from Godfrey's ($499, marked down from $999) on a whim and decided to test it out.

She shared images of the dirt that came out of her floors on Facebook.

'I'm super impressed using it on the automatic function,' she said.

'Plus it has a drying feature which sucks up excess water and pumps out heat.'

It is not advised to leave your carpets wet or damp because it might cause mould to form.

Another mum previously shared a DIY hack to create cheap carpet sprinklers at home.

The Australian woman called Emma said she used to buy branded carpet sprinkle from the supermarkets for as much as $16, but recently discovered she can make her own for a fraction of the price.

Emma mixed a bag of bi-carb soda with a few tablespoons of her favourite essential oil.

'You can use whatever essential oil you prefer (beware with cats and eucalyptus oil and a few others as they cause reactions),' Emma said. 'I just used a measuring spoon for ease to sprinkle it about.

'Much cheaper than a container of carpet sprinkle that only usually does me one run,' she added.

You simply sprinkle the mixture all over your carpets, let it soak for 20 minutes, and then vacuum as usual.

The mum said she discovered that you can buy giant bags of bi-carbonate soda (pictured), which is an effective cleaner and much cheaper than shop carpet sprinkle
