A top former adviser to President Joe Biden, 81, is dishing on why he really decided to step down from the 2024 race, and what his lasting legacy will be.

Meanwhile, Gavin Newsom has cast doubt on Donald Trump's claim that he was once on a helicopter with Willie Brown, the former lover of Kamala Harris, and it had to perform an emergency landing.

Newsom claimed he was on the helicopter as well and it was Jerry Brown, the former California governor, who was on board with them, and that there was no near crash.

Trusted messenger Anita Dunn says Joe Biden's greatest legacy will be Kamala Harris as she reveals why he really dropped out of the race

Former senior advisor for President Joe Biden Anita Dunn spoke about the president's decision to quit his reelection campaign, but argued his 'legacy' would be selecting Kamala Harris to be his vice president and political heir.

She said:

You know, it was rough. And no reflection on the vice president because I think one of the greatest things about Joe Biden’s legacy will be that he made sure that there was a pipeline in which Kamala Harris was going to be the natural person everyone turned to if something happened to him.

Dunn spoke about Biden and his decision to exit the race in an interview with Politico.

She indicated that Biden still believed he was the best candidate to beat Donald Trump, but said that Harris was suited to take on the challenge.

He ran because he believed he was the best person to beat Donald Trump. And because he also believed he was the best person to lead the country. Now, if he’s not a candidate, he made it very clear that the second-best person was his vice president. And that is where we are now.

Dunn stepped down from her White House position on July 30, choosing to go work for a SuperPAC that supported Kamala Harris.

Some Biden donors blamed Dunn for Biden's debate disaster that kicked off the movement to remove him from the presidential race, but she insisted that Biden had done fine.

Dunn also dismissed the idea that advisors purposefully put an aging Biden on the debate stage to force him out of the race.

'Totally ludicrous. The idea that we ever would have put him in that situation is just crazy,' she said.

Tim Walz helped free a man convicted of murdering an 11-year-old girl... and later arrested for drug and gun crimes

Gov. Tim Walz helped free a man he believed was not deserving of life in prison after fellow Minnesota Democrat Sen. Amy Klobuchar prosecuted the case in 2002.

The case of Myon Burrell dominated headlines in 2020 after the Associated Press revisited his case even though he was twice convicted for the death of 11-year-old girl Tyesha Edwards who was doing homework in her home when a stray bullet struck and killed her.

Walz voted to free Burrell, arguing that life in prison was too draconian a sentence.

Since obtaining his freedom, Burrell has been arrested twice by police for drug and gun charges.

Republicans demand answers about Iranian plot to assassinate Trump

Earlier this week, a Pakistani man with ties to the Iranian government has been charged with plotting political assassinations that may have targeted Donald Trump.

Asif Merchant, 46, is accused of working with an undercover officer posing as a hitman who would carry out the assassinations after travelling to New York.

The Department of Justice says his aim was to take out high-ranking U.S. officials in  August and September.

The investigation was carried out weeks before Trump was shot at his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

And now lawmakers want to know why Trump's security at the rally wasn't sufficient in light of the plot.

Millions have been spent in the ad wars since President Biden's dramatic presidential race exit

By Sarah Ewall-Wice, Senior U.S. Political Reporter

Both Democrats and Republicans have spent millions on political advertising in the presidential race since President Biden's exit last month.

When it comes to TV advertising in battleground states, both sides have spent more than $20 million from July 21 through this weekend according to tracking by AdImpact.

It's where both sides have spent the most on TV ads, showing just how important the state is to winning in November.

Democrats are spending more in the other two so-called blue wall states with more than $10 million in Michigan to Republicans' $7 million and more than $8 million in Wisconsin to Republicans' more than $6 million.

At the same time, Republicans have outspent Democrats in Georgia with $10 million to more than $6.5 million and in Arizona with $7.5 million to Democrats' $3.4 million.

Natinonally, Democrats spent $14 million on ads in the Olympics as well while Republicans haven't spent anything.

But one of the most dramatic differences is in digital advertising. Democrats have spent a whopping $42 million on Facebook and Google while Republicans have spent just over $5 million.
