WHAT is up with Gavin Newsom's voice? Governor's croaky delivery steals focus of debate as he battles Ron DeSantis with viewers concerned for his health

1 year ago 15

Viewers worried about the country's future found themselves worried for Gavin Newsom's health as the California governor croaked his way through this evening's debate with Florida's Ron DeSantis.

Crime, immigration and schools were on the agenda as the two potential presidents attempted to set out their stalls for politics after Joe Biden and Donald Trump.

But the clash of ideologies was lost on some viewers who struggled to concentrate in the face of Newsom's hoarse delivery.

Many then took to social media but they were split over whether it was health, nerves or the sheer amount of talking that did for the Democrat.

'What happened to your voice? It's crazy scratchy,' wrote Shanna I on X, formerly Twitter.

Both governors had their work cut out being heard at all as they constantly spoke over each other on the Fox debate show .

Fox was anticipating a big audience as voters gathered to listen to the two young presidential possibles set out their stalls for the future

But the California governor's vocals proved too much for some who vented their irritation

'This debate proves that Gavin Newsom is a whiny child with an extremely annoying voice,' added spieswholie.

'Nobody outside California will vote for this idiot.'

'Gavin started off cocky and laughing, and now he's straining his voice and no longer laughing,' wrote Ahuva Shain, 'body language tells a big story!'

Both governors had their work cut out being heard at all as they constantly spoke over each other on the Fox debate show.

DeSantis slammed his California counterpart by pointing to his hypocrisy during COVID-19 by going out to fine-dining restaurant The French Laundry and sending his children to in-person private schools while his residents were still under lockdown.

Newsom accused DeSantis of 'trolling' with his move to transport migrants out of border states to Democratic sanctuary cities – and said he's trying to one-up former President Donald Trump with his antics.

'The great red and blue state debate – can they just stop talking over each other??' demanded Melody 22.

'Ron DeSantis let Gavin Newsom with his crackling voice (is that due to California smog) get a word in!'

'I can't even watch this debate right now because the sound of Gavin Newsom's voice makes me nauseous,' added Paula Scanlan, complete with a vomiting emoji.

Crime, immigration and schools were on the agenda for the much anticipated showdown

But the candidates talking over each other proved more of an annoyance for some

'Real question: what health condition does Newsom have?' demanded at seethew0rld.

'Besides his always raspy voice, what is up with his bright red hands?'

'Dear God, that voice,' added Linda Traitz.

Republican broadcaster Jenna Ellis had urged conservatives to tune into the debate in a bid to see whether the Florida governor has what it takes to unseat Donald Trump in the hearts of primary voters.

But that earned her a clapback from viewers with sensitive ears.

'So if I don't watch because I can't stand the sound of Gavin Newsom's voice I'm not a real conservative? Demanded Andfrew Lovsness.

Owen Durden suggested the 56-year-old was simply trying to channel former Democrat president Bill Clinton 'from the voice, to the hand motion to body jitters'.

And Timothy Lassley suggested an even more extreme comparison: 'All I hear is Nancy Pelosi voice when Gavin Newsom talks,' he tweeted.

But DeSantis did not have it all his own way with a different take from Mike Tausig.

'Neither Newsom nor Ron DeSantis will shut up and answer a question,' he wrote.

'Desantis' voice is GRATING!'

Newsom initially challenged DeSantis to a debate in September 2022. At the time, DeSantis was not yet running in the 2024 Republican presidential primary.

DeSantis is now running but consistently polling second, far behind Trump.

He has already participated in three Republican presidential primary debates against his GOP competitors without Trump ahead of the battle with Newsom.

Meanwhile, Newsom is not in the 2024 race – and insists he has no intentions of entering the running and instead is serving as a surrogate to Biden.

Fox News host Sean Hannity chaired the debate in Alpharetta, Georgia

In an interview with Hannity in June, Newsom, a liberal, again said he would debate DeSantis, a conservative, with the Fox host moderating.

DeSantis officially agreed in August, telling Hannity during an interview: 'I'm game. Let's get it done. Just tell me when and where.'

'We were shocked when he accepted,' the Californian's spokesman said to DailyMail.com

'Newsom had been challenging Desantis (sic) for months to debate, and the fact that he finally accepted as his campaign was circling the drain shows just how bad Desantis (sic) needs to distract from his disaster of candidacy,' he added.
