A recipe change in a popular Whole Foods product has raised alarms for incredulous shoppers who claim the store has 'ruined everything.'
The $5 Berry Chantilly Cake was a popular treat among Whole Foods shoppers until one curious fan discovered how it suddenly changed for the worse.
A online creator shared her frustrations and showed viewers the cake she bought, flat rated at $5, which she describes as having major changes from its original lush, fruit-filled recipe.
'It's now just a little English tea cake,' she said, further describing that the new version had berries on the outside, filled with jam in the middle of the sponge and is now 'half the size it used to be.'
Outraged user online shared her frustrations after finding out that Whole Foods changed the recipe for the beloved $5 Chantilly cake slice
The cake according to users online now is filled with jam in the middle instead of fruit, doesn't taste the same and is half the size it used to be
'It tastes like raspberry jam flavored cleaning product,' she said after tasting the cake.
The creator commented in another recent video that Whole Foods had been making all kinds of changes to their products and stores that equally disappointed customers.
Including taking the rotisserie machines off the floor, the discontinuation of sushi chefs in store, and the recipe change to the mac and cheese.
'We've let them ruin everything!', she said.
One commenter wrote, 'The way I audibly gasped.'
Another said, 'I used to work at whole foods bakery and its crazy ever since amazon bought it, they've gotten everything frozen and its more expensive.'
Another creator was equally disappointed.
Lisa, who usually posts about her law school experiences, referred to the change as 'criminal behavior'.
She continues that the 'worst news ever in my entire life' came when she found out the product was being changed.
The user says she used to get a slice on a weekly basis, but went in finding no slices available and was told it was because of the recipe change.
'He was like "oh we actually changed the recipe, we don't do it like that anymore",' she said, '"now they're sending to us frozen, there's no more fruit in the middle" and I was like why would they do that?'
She goes on to say: 'Not only are they taking the fruit out but they're increasing the price.'
Lisa, a user online, shared frustration in a video after finding out the cake she bought on 'a weekly basis' was now getting shipped in frozen with a change to the recipe
Lisa was also told the only original Chantilly cakes left are the full cakes, so she bought one and hoped to freeze the pieces but found out that the full cake still wasn't the same taste.
She ends the video expressing her disappointment and that she 'thinks all of America is disappointed', asking Whole Foods to reverse their decision.
Commenters on both videos shared their own disappointment, expressing their love for the old version of the cake.
One said, 'They have been getting rid of all the good stuff.'
Another tagged the Whole Foods account and said, 'WHAT, I'M UPSET @Whole Foods Market'
'NO, I GET THIS CAKE FOR MY BIRTHDAY EVERY YEAR', another commented.
Whole Foods told the Daily Dot: 'Previously, our Berry Chantilly by-the-slice cake program varied by store location.'
They continued: 'We recently aligned the flavor profile, size, packaging, and price so customers will have the same high-quality experience in each of our stores – a delicious cake slice with fresh fruit, berry compote, cream cheese mascarpone, and fluffy vanilla cake layers.'
