VOX leader Santiago Abascal used the assassination attempt on Donald Trump to slam Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s PSOE and the left-wing Sumar platform, saying they are secretly lamenting that he survived the attack.
Trump survived an assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, suffering an injury to his ear. The FBI identified the gunman as Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old Republican Party voter from Pennsylvania who was shot dead by police, according to media reports.
“Thank God Donald Trump has survived the assassination attempt”, Abascal commented on X shortly after the incident on Saturday.
“We have to stop the globalist left that is sowing hatred, ruin and war”, said the leader of VOX, taking advantage to once again attack left-wing parties in Spain and worldwide.
“The terrible thing is that in Spain, the worst version of this left (PSOE and Sumar) is governing, and right now, they will be intimately regretting (not in their public, official manifestations) that the assassin has failed”, Abascal stated.
Shortly after the assassination attempt, Sánchez strongly condemned the attack on X, saying that violence and hatred “have no place in a democracy.”
“I would like to convey my strongest condemnation of the attack on Donald Trump during a rally in Pennsylvania”, Sánchez added, Euractiv´s partner EFE reported.
Sumar, which has 31 seats in parliament, also condemned the attack late on Sunday afternoon.
“Violence is incompatible with everything, especially with democracy”, Labour Minister Yolanda Díaz, the former Sumar leader, said on X.
Milei and Abascal: two sides of the same ‘ultra’ coin
Abascal’s harsh words were echoed by Argentine President Javier Milei, a close friend of the VOX leader.
Last May, Milei attended the presentation of VOX candidates for the European elections in Madrid, where the far-right party doubled its number of seats compared to the previous European elections in 2019, going from three to six.
“The desperation of the international left, which today sees its nefarious ideology expiring and is ready to destabilise democracies and promote violence to screw itself to power, is not surprising. Panicked at losing the ballot box, they resort to terrorism to impose their retrograde and authoritarian agenda”, Milei wrote on X.
The “libertarian” Argentine president is currently in the United States, where he is attending the Sun Valley conference in Idaho, EFE reported.
