Three men and a woman have died following a single-vehicle crash on a remote country road south of Byron Bay.

Shortly after 5.45am on Saturday emergency services were called to Back Channel Road, Wardell, south of Ballina in northern NSW.

Officers found a blue Mazda BT50 ute that had left the road and had rolled.

The male driver and three passengers – two men and a woman – died at the scene.

A member of the public alerted police to the crash site, and officers said it was unclear when the accident happened.

Investigators will examine whether the smash occurred on Friday night.

Police and firefighters could be seen near the wreckage on Saturday morning with barriers in place. 

A crime scene was established as specialist police from the Crash Investigation Unit investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.

Road closures are in place and drivers are urged to avoid the area.
