Bruce Buffer's mistakes can be counted on one hand but he made a shocking blunder at UFC 301.
The veteran octagon announcer, who almost never misses an event, is usually word perfect but had an unusual brain fade in the cage on Saturday night.
Anthony Smith had just submitted Vitor Petrino in the first round of their fight in Rio de Janeiro - handing the Brazilian his first ever loss.
But Buffer roared into the mic: 'The referee called a stop to this contest at two minutes of the very first round. Declaring the winner, by submission, due to a guillotine choke and still undefeated, Vitor.. excuse me! Anthony 'Lionheart' Smith.'
Upon hearing Buffer say his opponent's name, Smith turned around with a look of utter confusion on his face.
Anthony Smith turned around baffled by Bruce Buffer's announcement at UFC 301
Buffer has been the announcer for the UFC since the early days and is a popular figure
Smith ended up winning the fight in the first round due to this submission over Petrino
He then realised the harmless mistake and found it hilarious, sharing a laugh with Daniel Cormier.
No doubt Buffer will be given plenty of ribbing about it in jest but the right announcement was at least made in the end.
Buffer is part of the furniture at the UFC and is a key part of generating the atmosphere in the arena, building up to his famous 'It's time', shout.
Perhaps it was the jet lag taking hold of him, given the long trip down to Brazil but no doubt the perfectionist will be annoyed at his error.
