Democrats may have the last laugh after proposing a bill that would rename a federal prison in Florida after Donald Trump, who is facing 88 criminal charges.
The move is a response to Republicans who introduced a two-page bill earlier this week to rename a popular Washington, D.C. area airport after the former president.
Washington Dulles International Airport - named after former Secretary of State John Foster Dulles - would be renamed Donald J. Trump International Airport under the GOP measure.
Now, Democrats are striking back with a similarly unserious two-page piece of legislation.
'The Miami Federal Correctional Institution in Florida shall, after date of the enactment of this Act, be known and designated as the 'Donald J. Trump Federal Correctional Institution,'' the liberals' bill states.
Democrat lawmakers revealed a bill Friday that would aim to rename the Miami Federal Correctional Institution to the Donald J. Trump Federal Correctional Institution
Former President Donald Trump is no stranger to prisons, in August 2023 he was required to get a booking photo in Fulton County, Georgia, for his ongoing election interference case
The bill was introduced by Reps. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., Jared Moskowitz, D-Fla., and John Garamendi, D-Calif.
Notably, Connolly represents part of the Virginia district where Dulles International is located and Moskowitz represents an area miles from the Miami prison.
'When our Republican colleagues introduced their bill to rename Dulles after Donald Trump, I said the more fitting option would be to rename a federal prison,' Connolly said in a statement Friday.
'I see no reason to wait. Donald Trump faces nearly 100 felony charges. He has been found liable of sexual abuse and, subsequently, for defaming the victim of that abuse.'
'He has been fined hundreds of millions of dollars in a civil fraud case,' the Virginian continued.'It is only right that the closest federal prison to Mar-a-Lago should bear his name.'
'I hope our Republican friends will join us in bestowing upon Donald J. Trump the only honor he truly deserves.'
Moskowitz also took a shot at the former president.
'Everyone knows President Trump loves to write his name in gold letters on all his buildings,' he said in a statement.
'But he's never had his name on a federal building before and as a public servant I just want to help the former president. Help us make that dream a reality.'
Garamendi told DailyMail.com in a statement: 'Our bill simply draws attention to the MAGA Republicans' failure to do the important work of the American people.'
'House Republicans have again shown that they are distracted doing cartwheels to please Donald Trump instead of introducing meaningful legislation to better our country,' he continued.
Ironically, the Miami prison the Democrats are suggesting should be renamed is where Trump associate Peter Navarro is currently imprisoned for contempt of Congress charges.
The bill, though unlikely to ever get passed, serves as an informal press release reminding Americans about the legal troubles Trump is currently embroiled in.
The measure is also a clear tit-for-tat response to Republican's Trump airport bill, which surely will never take off because it will face turbulence in a Democrat-held Senate.
Still, that did not stop the GOP from launching the idea.
'As millions of domestic and international travelers fly through the airport, there is no better symbol of freedom, prosperity, and strength than hearing ‘Welcome to Trump International Airport’ as they land on American soil,' Republican Deputy Whip Guy Reschenthaler said after unveiling his bill to rename Dulles.
Republicans are floating the idea of renaming Dulles to Donald J. trump International Airport
The Trump International bill is being supported by several Republicans including Reps. Mike Waltz, R-Fla., Chuck Fleishmann, R-Tenn., Paul Gosar, R-Ariz., Troy Nehls, R-Texas, Andy Ogles, R-Tenn., and Barry Moore, R-Ala.
The Trump prison bill also has an equally slim chance of ever becoming law, as Speaker Mike Johnson will likely never put the bill up for a vote.
