In today’s rapidly changing world, taking the long view has become essential. For individuals, organisations, and think tanks sharing liberal values, looking ahead is not just a luxury – it is a necessity. It is about seeing beyond the present moment to understand the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, and it is about being proactive in shaping the future we want to see.
Sarah Lissek is the European Affairs Manager at Friedrich Naumann Foundation European Dialogue.
Looking into the future should not be about speculation, but about preparation. By anticipating potential trends and developments, we can better position ourselves to address them effectively. This becomes particularly important when it comes to ensuring that our fundamental European values of human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, rule of law, and human rights, remain central in the future.
Navigating towards a Free Europe in 2050
While we can take pride in the progress made towards a free and liberal Europe, built on values the above-mentioned values, it is essential to recognise that our journey is far from over. Despite all of the progress made, significant challenges and uncertainties lie ahead. As we look to the future, we must ask ourselves: What’s next? What will and what should Europe look like in 2050? What values make Europe different? What are the core values and principles that a liberal Europe 2050 stands for? In short: What is our vision for Europe?
In envisioning the future of Europe, it is essential to confront key issues: internally, the EU is currently lacking transparency and faced with bureaucratic complexity, and a democratic deficit, while aging populations and declining competitiveness pose future threats. Tackling climate change and environmental imperatives becomes paramount, aligning with efforts to combat human rights violations and foster equitable opportunities. Externally, Europe must navigate geopolitical shifts and the emergence of autocratic regimes. This necessitates fostering stronger ties with neighbouring countries and achieving military self-sufficiency, amidst geopolitical uncertainties and hybrid threats.
Amidst these challenges, it is imperative to remain steadfast in our commitment to liberal values and aspirations, ensuring that our actions today align with the world we envision for tomorrow. Looking to the future is not just about being prepared – it is about staying true to our values and working to create the world we want to live in.
About Project 2050
The European Dialogue Programme of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom in Brussels presents Project Europe 2050 as the innovation platform for a liberal Europe.
Our concept is centred on a vision of an inclusive, globalized Europe for citizens. With our effort, we want to encourage sustainability in all facets of society. We focus on creative approaches to managing resources, energy, and climate change. We also want to build a Europe of citizens that represents and benefits everyone by looking at fresh programs and regulations that promote increased inclusion, equality, and social justice. Lastly, the goal of our effort is to advance a global Europe that is inspiring to all.
