Prince William will not be in Dortmund for England's crunch Euro 2024 semi-final against the Netherlands this evening due to work commitments.

The Prince of Wales, who is president of the Football Association, has been present in Germany for two of England's five matches during the tournament so far.

The second of these was the quarter-final match on Saturday in which England beat Switzerland on penalties after a 1-1 draw, with William seen rejoicing in the stands.

In a personally-signed message on X after the game, the Prince said: 'Nail biting to the very end. Well done @England! Semi-finals here we come! We believe. W.'

William also watched the 1-1 draw against Denmark in the group stage in Frankfurt last month, which was the team's second match of the tournament.

Yesterday, the Prince returned to his former airbase of RAF Valley in Anglesey, North Wales, for the first time since becoming its honorary air commodore.

And 42-year-old William has further major engagements planned this week which mean he cannot attend the semi-final match tonight, which kicks off at 8pm.

His wife Kate continues to undergo chemotherapy treatment for cancer, and has only been present at one royal event since Christmas - Trooping the Colour last month. However, there are hopes she could be at Wimbledon this weekend.

Kensington Palace officials are thought to be waiting until the last-minute to make a final decision on whether the Princess can attend the All England Club in London.

And the Duchess of Gloucester has been lined up as a possible replacement to present the trophies if the Princess is unavailable amid her cancer treatment.

William would be expected to attend Sunday's final in Berlin if England make it through tonight. Spain will be the opponents after they beat France 2-1 last night.

England are the only team remaining not to have previously won the Euros, with the Dutch doing it in 1988 and Spain and France having three and two wins respectively.
