A man has been found dead on a main road in regional Queensland with a gunshot wound to the side of his head.

Emergency services were called to Yeppoon Road in Rockhampton at 3.53am on Friday to reports a person was laying on the side of the road.

The victim, believed to be aged in his 30s, is believed to have been shot and was suffering 'critical head injuries'.

He was declared dead at the scene.

The death is being treated as suspicious with a Queensland Police spokesperson confirming a crime scene has been established.

Both lanes of Yeppoon Road have been closed as investigations continue with police at Norman Road intersection directing traffic.

Superintendent Darrin Shadlow revealed multiple gunshots were heard before the triple-zero call was made.

'We have spoken to some people in that area who believe they heard what they believe was gunshots. It was just before the triple-0 call came in in that area and it was multiple shots,' Superintendent Shadlow said.

'The witnesses that we have spoken to believe they heard more than one vehicle departing the scene at speed.'

The body was found lying on the road, not next to it, he clarified.

It remains at the scene with specialists from Brisbane in attendance.

'They're looking for anything like any spent casings or live ammunition, anything like that.' Superintendent Shadlow said.

'I don't believe it was a random attack. But obviously investigations are continuing.

'However I do not believe there is any cause for alarm among members of the public,' he added.

The man has not been identified at this stage.

Anyone who witnessed any suspicious behaviour in the area at the time or who may have information which could assist with investigations is asked to contact police.
