It's the season for giving, but not all Christmas gifts are well-received.

A survey of 2,000 UK adults has revealed some of the worst gifts they've been gifted at Christmas, with tea towels, broken mugs and even deodorant topping the list.

Toothbrushes, mouse mats, old CDs, washing-up gloves and pants also appeared on the list, as well as out-of-date chocolates and washing-up gloves.

A survey of 2,000 UK adults has revealed some of the worst gifts they've been gifted at Christmas

6. Food you’re allergic to

7. Out-of-date chocolate

9. Set of jams

10. A note pad

11. A pen

12. A broken mug

The survey found 51 per cent have given a gift they know the recipient won't like, and 41 per cent of those do so 'just to get a laugh'.

While 42 per cent admitted to re-gifting something they had already been given.

Jessica Lovelace, spokesperson for Hallmark, which commissioned the research, said: 'It's clear that the nation is split between naughty or nice when it comes to gift giving.

'There are some truly surprising presents on the list.

'The best gifts to give this Christmas are ones that show you have truly considered the recipient to ensure you can avoid any festive disappointment.

'Christmas is all about creating moments that count, and giving something meaningful to a loved one is the best way to show you care.'

The survey also found 28 per cent believe money or a gift card is the go-to present, because they have no other ideas (35 per cent) and it's easier than going to the shops (23 per cent).

But 14 per cent of participants rated themselves as brilliant gift-givers.

When it comes to the best kind of present to receive, 'one which is thoughtful' is a winner for 34 per cent.

Nearly one in five (17 per cent) of participants said they would like something that aligns with their hobbies, while two thirds claimed beautiful wrapping is important to them.

Jessica Lovelace, for Hallmark, added: 'A lot of the time, it’s the thought that counts when gift giving, with presents that align with hobbies or interests the key to success.'
