Zach Wilson is once again the New York Jets’ starting quarterback just days after reports surfaced claiming the struggling third-year signal caller was against returning to the top of the depth chart.

Head coach Robert Saleh made the announcement on Wednesday as the team prepares to face the Houston Texans on Sunday in East Rutherford, New Jersey: 'Zach gives us the best chance to win.'

Jets waived Tim Boyle after two starts and signed Brett Rypien off the Seattle Seahawks’ practice squad Tuesday in the team’s latest shuffle at the quarterback position.

Boyle mostly struggled while replacing  Wilson the past two games - both losses.

The Jets (4-8) are mired in a five-game losing streak and their offense has been unable to consistently produce with Aaron Rodgers sidelined since tearing his left Achilles tendon four snaps into his debut with New York in the season opener.

The Athletic's Dianna Russini and Zack Rosenblatt previously reported that Wilson was reluctant to return to the starting role.

Rodgers ripped that report and defended Wilson during his weekly interview with ESPN's Pat McAfee.

'I love the kid. I've spent a lot of time with him. I think he's an amazing young man... and he is young, he's early 20s,' Rodgers said on the Pat McAfee Show.

'He's gone through a lot of s*** in the last three years, and he's got every right to be frustrated and disappointed about it.

'I will say this, when you have sources, right, and that's always an interesting thing,' Rodgers continued. 'First of all, you can go down a whole rabbit hole with actual sources, made up sources, why is someone willing to be a source?

'What are they gaining out of that? On and on and on, but when you use sources, and whether intentional or unintentional, try to assassinate someone's character, like that report does for Zach, I have a real hard time with that.'

'I mean, you're basically saying that this kid is quitting on the team and doesn't want to play and has given the middle finger to the organization.'

Wilson was benched following the team's November 19 defeat to Buffalo, but the team continued to struggle with backups Boyle and Trevor Siemian under center. Both Boyle and Siemian played in Sunday's loss to the visiting Atlanta Falcons as the Jets fell to 4-8 on the season.

The third-year quarterback has notoriously struggled since replacing Rogers in Week 1, when the former Super Bowl winner went down with a torn Achilles. Although Rodgers continues to progress in his rehab, he previously said he won't try to return in 2023 unless the Jets were in playoff contention, which no longer seems to be the case.

For the season, Wilson is 3-6 as a start, while competing just 59.2 percent of his passes for 1,944 yards, six touchdowns and seven picks.

Zach Wilson could soon return to the starting lineup for the Jets after briefly being benched

And things didn't get any better for the Jets quarterbacks on Sunday.

Siemian replaced a benched Boyle in the fourth quarter of the Jets' latest loss, dropping a 13-8 decision to the Atlanta Falcons.

'As an offense, we work our tail off during practice,' running back Dalvin Cook said. 'You get looks, we do things in practice and you expect for it to translate to the game, and we're just not having that translation right now.

'So, it's frustrating.'
