Aussie cycling hero Conor Leahy was treated to a smooch from his glamorous girlfriend after he helped his nation defeat fierce rivals Great Britain in the men's team pursuit.

Debutant Leahy combined with Oliver Bleddyn, Sam Welsford and Kellan O'Brien to beat the all-conquering Brits to win gold at the Olympic Games in Paris, clocking a rapid time of three minutes, 42.067 seconds in the decider.

And after sealing his fate as an Olympic champion, Leahy aimed straight for the crowd where he was embraced by girlfriend Zara Awramenko.

She later took to Instagram to congratulate her beau and his teammates.

'Olympic champions,' she wrote alongside four gold medal emojis.

'Congratulations boys on an epic race and a gold medal.'

The quartet shattered the men's world record in their semi-final run on Tuesday, but did not need to set the same electric pace to see off the Brits.

It was a pulsating final, but two of the British riders touched wheels on the last lap and nearly crashed, blowing out the margin.

Leahy was only a reserve for the Tokyo Games, and could not contain his delight after Wednesday's victory.

'I don't think I've processed it yet,' he told Nine. 'Like especially what happened last cycle. I just wanted to be a part of that team so bad and being so close to it. It has  driven me, drove me so hard  to get to this position.

'But it's about winning today, and I knew that we did everything to do that and I can't believe it.

'It's incredible.'
