Inside the mobile clinic where DNC attendees can get abortions and vasectomies: Doctor reveals they are already busy with patients in Chicago

The organizers behind a mobile health clinic offering free abortions and vasectomies near where thousands of people are gathering for the Democratic National Convention in Chicago are pushing back amid outrage from conservatives. 

Planned Parenthood Great Rivers announced it was bringing its mobile health clinic to Chicago and offering free services to those who signed up on August 19 and 20, which are the first two days of the convention.  

Before the clinic even arrived, they announced that all of the appointments had been filled and that they would follow up if they had cancelations but the move sparked an avalanche of criticism online. 

'The goal was we knew there were tens of thousands of people coming in around this time, and we really wanted to show and highlight what is possible when you have a state that supports reproductive access,' Dr. Colleen Nicholas, chief medical officer for Planned Parenthood Great Rivers told DailyMail.com.

'We're really at a critical time in public health were we really need to be thinking about doing things differently, and mobile health care is one of the ways to do that,' she said. 

On Monday, the mobile clinic had twelve vasectomy patients scheduled. Over the course of two days, they expect to see somewhere between 20 and 30 patients for medication abortions. 

DailyMail.com was given access to see inside one of the two rooms being used for patients' procedures over the two days it is in town.

It included medical equipment and an examination table. Between the two exam rooms was also a small waiting area, and organizers set up a table outside to check people in before they entered the mobile clinic. 

The clinic was set up just a short ride from the Democratic National Convention but outside the security perimeter. The site of the clinic is also where several other organizations are holding events alongside the convention in Chicago as Democrats gather nearby.

Nicholas pushed back on the outrage over the mobile clinic arriving in the city while the convention was going on. She argued they visit areas in need and are not at all tied to political events taking place. 

'We are here just providing health care,' she said. 'This health care isn't a Democrat issue. It's not a Republican issue. It's truly just making sure that people of this country have access to the things that they need.'

'We do things in a way that meets people where they are and makes health care accessible,' Nicholas said. 

In the same parking lot were the mobile clinic is located, several other vendors were setting up for events throughout the four days of the convention.

Just feet away, there was a giant inflatable IUD known as 'Freeda Womb.' 

 The arrival of the mobile clinic has been met with fierce backlash online.  

One woman wrote on X 'handing out free abortions out of a bus just blocks from the DNC is sinister.'

Another conservative woman posted calling it a 'literal bloodbath' and claimed it was 'evil on full display from the DNC.' 

The president of the Conservative Caucus wrote on X 'THIS IS A CULT.' 

Outside the gate where the clinic was parked, several anti-abortion protesters were carrying signs. One protester's sign read 'it's not too late.' Another sign claimed that abortions kill women. 

After about a dozen protesters packed up and left, a lone man remained outside the gate shouting at organizers including Nicholas by name. 

Inside the actual Democratic National Convention, the separate Planned Parenthood Action Fund which conducts advocacy did have a booth and was participating in convention events. Attendees who stopped by would pick up pamphlets as well as lip balm. 

Abortion access has been a top issue for Democrats since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade in 2022 ending the right to an abortion nationwide and returning the issue to states.

Abortion access will be on prominent display throughout the convention as it has galvanized the Democratic party base in a series of recent elections since Roe fell and will be directly on the ballot in multiple states including the battleground of Arizona come November. 

Several women are slated to speak Monday night during the convention primetime coverage about their own experiences being unable to get abortions in states where the procedure has been banned. 

Vice President Kamala Harris has been a leading figure in the Biden administration on reproductive rights. She was the first sitting vice president to visit an abortion clinic while in office when she went and spoke at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Minneapolis in March.

On the campaign trail, Harris has vowed to restore abortion rights under Roe if elected president, urging lawmakers to send her a bill.
